Tsunami warning system on its 50th year

The Pacific Tsunami Warning System (PTWS) marks its 50th year this 2015. The organisation was established in response to the 1960 M9.5 earthquake of South Central Chile. This was the largest earthquake recorded by seismographs. A Pacific-wide tsunami was triggered, killing thousands in Japan, Hawaii, Philippines and West Coast of United States. The PTWS was organised over the decades by an international cooperation of countries under the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission IOC-UNESCO framework.

Deep-Ocean Tsunami Detection Buoy

The Deep-Ocean Tsunami Detection Buoy technology was developed to verify the presence of tsunami waves caused by submerged earthquake. This was developed in the United States of America by the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Buoys observe and record changes in sea level out in the deep oceans. The tsunami buoy system comprises of the pressure sensor and the surface buoy. The pressure sensor anchored to the sea floor measures the change in height of the water by calculating associated changes in the water pressure. The change in water column height is broadcasted to the surface buoy by acoustic telemetry and then delivered via satellite to the tsunami warning centre. In setting up the tsunami buoy it needs to be far enough from any potential earthquake epicentre. This is needed to establish that there is no obstruction amidst the earthquake signal at the buoy and the sea level signal from the tsunami.

How does the System Work

Once the Deep-Ocean Tsunami Detection Buoy sent tsunami warnings. PTWS staff analyses seismic and sea level data. Once they figured out that there is an approaching tsunami, they disseminate threat assessments to National Tsunami Warning Center around the affected areas. Then, the countries issue the tsunami warning to its people and prepare emergency response actions. The PTWS uses a network of sensors to detect tsunamis and a communications infrastructure to issue timely alarms to permit evacuation of the coastal areas.

Tsunami Watches and Warnings

There are different messages issued by the tsunami centres, these are warning, watch, advisory and information statement. The Tsunami Warning message warns that there is a possible inundating wave and residents are then advised for full evacuation. The Tsunami Advisory implies that there are strong currents and the communities are to stay away from the shore. The Tsunami Watch means danger level are not known yet and the populace is to stay alert for more information. The Tsunami Information Statement delivers message of minor waves there is no action needed. Tsunami messages may change from time to time depending on the earthquake’s magnitude and chance in the waves’ height.
